Student parents often struggle to keep up with not only their school work but the needs of their children as well. Since not a lot of schools have public facilities that accommodate students who have children, many student parents find it challenging to attend to the needs of their children and go to school.

According to Phys.org, A recent study conducted by the Community College Journal of Research and Practice, CUNY SPH, examined student parents’ daily struggles on campus. The study found that student parents must constantly ask for help and request extended deadlines for childcare facilities, food subsidies, and assignment deadlines. Student parents also have issues balancing school and parenting responsibilities and dealing with financial stress. In addition, Student parents are more likely to drop out of university than their non-parent peers.

However, the study identified several ways universities could support student parents, such as providing on-campus child care, offering flexible class schedules, and providing more detailed support from staff and community members. By taking these steps, universities can help student parents succeed in their studies and earn their degrees.

How Can More Schools Support Student Parents?

It is no secret that parenting can be a challenging endeavor, especially for those who are still in school themselves. In addition to the usual responsibilities of homework and classes, student parents must also care for their children; This can often lead to difficulties such as missed classes, stressed students, and even dropouts. However, there are some ways that schools can help support student parents.

For example, providing childcare on-site or offering flexible scheduling options can make it easier for student parents to balance their responsibilities. Additionally, schools can raise awareness about available resources such as food assistance and healthcare. Schools can also make it known to other students and guests on campus that student parents are welcome and not to judge what they do on campus.

By supporting student parents, we can help ensure that these students have the best chance of success in their academic and parental roles.

Student Hires Programs

Our workshops provide valuable insight into different careers and help our students make informed decisions about their future. By working with Student Hires, disadvantaged youth can gain the confidence and skills they need to succeed.

Conclusion

Universities are beginning to understand that accommodating student parents can make a difference in their success. However, more work needs to be done to support these students. Otherwise, more students will drop out, contributing to a nationwide enrollment decline. So how does your college or university aid student parents? Let us know in the comments below!
