Proper planning of instructional activities requires anticipation of student needs. You will need to match your students’ abilities with content that is appropriate. Activities may be based on student interests, their academic needs, even program, district, or state requirements. Begin with the objective of the lesson. Once the objective of the lesson and the activity has been decided, you will need to start planning how to differentiate for the different abilities in your group. Because there will always be a range of readiness, you must know your students’ abilities and needs in order to adjust the lesson as needed. Cultural experiences, language proficiency, or social-emotional readiness may also influence how you might change or add onto a lesson. Plan ahead to differentiate the lesson and you will be able to adapt and make changes as necessary while teaching.
