Oakland Students Receive $50 Million Fund to Help Pay for College

Oakland students will receive a $50 million fund to help pay for their college tuition and supplies. Mayor Libby Schaaf and Vice President Kamala Harris announced on August 12th, 2022, that the money will go to Oakland Promise. The Oakland Promise is a scholarship and support program that helps young students in Oakland graduate from college every year. This program provides Oakland residents with college savings accounts.

The 50 million raised by Mayor Libby Schaaf through corporate and individual donations will help fund $500 low-income savings accounts for the city's newborn babies. The money will also provide up to $1000 a year for low-income families and public school students to get the necessary supplies. Families can have this money in their savings account created by CalKIDS, which allows students to save money for college who otherwise wouldn't be able to.

These efforts are being made because of California's historic budget increase and Mayor Schaaf's campaign to ensure students are taken care of. At the start of her campaign, she launched the Oakland Undivided, a campaign to provide quality internet and laptops in OUSD in collaboration with Oakland Promise. Her office has also been a part of the regularly updated Oakland Teacher Residency Program. This program gives teachers affordable housing and proper facilities to live more comfortably.
