Riverside Unified School District Participating in Largest Earthquake Drill Shakeout
Estimated Reading Time: minutes
Riverside Unified School District will be one of the thousands of school districts participating in the annual Great California Shakeout earthquake drill. The Shakeout is the world's largest earthquake drill, and it is designed to help students and adults learn how to stay safe during earthquakes. This year, the focus of the Shakeout is on getting prepared for potential large-scale earthquakes.
The ShakeOut drill will happen on October 20, 2022, at 10:20 a.m. in California; This is when people practice what to do during an earthquake. The Riverside County Office of Education wants schools, colleges, individuals, and families to sign up and join schools from all over in practicing earthquake safety. Families and students can register on the ShakeOut drill website. Still, businesses can also register and participate with all of their employees.
Teachers can also make recordings of the ShakeOut drills for information purposes and can spread the video around; this video showcases how Riverside Unified personally handles their ShakeOut earthquake drills.
Some areas in California have more earthquakes than other areas. But all of California has more earthquakes than any other country. So you could be anywhere an earthquake happens: at home, work, or even on vacation.
It is important to be prepared for an earthquake; This means having a plan and supplies ready, so you can survive and recover quickly. The Great California ShakeOut is an opportunity to practice what to do during an earthquake ("Drop, Cover and Hold On") and to encourage people to review and update their emergency preparedness plans and supplies. Here is the website page for people who want to sign-up and learn more information.
