Tallahassee Community College (TCC) has teamed up with Danfoss Turbocor, one of the area's major machine builders, to offer an internship in Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) Machining that is automatically and digitally controlled. The bespoke internship will address the growing need for this skillset among Danfoss employees.

CNC machining is a manufacturing process that uses pre-programmed software and code to control the movement of machine tools such as drills, lathes, mills, etc. This automated process allows for precision and accuracy in producing parts and components and is used in various automotive, aerospace, medical device manufacturing, and other industries.

CNC machines are programmed with instructions that tell them how to move the tools to produce the desired shape or size of a part or component. Instructions for each device are written in different languages, such as G-code or APT (Automatically Programmed Tool). Once the instructions are written, they are put into the machine, and it will follow them step by step to make what you want.

The first cohort of interns will be able to work in twelve slots. There is no previous manufacturing experience required. Individuals chosen will attend three months of classes at Tallahassee Community College from February 1 through April 29, 2023. Classes will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am to 12:30 pm (UCT).

Trainees will then participate in a six-month internship starting at Tallahassee Community College and transitioning to Danfoss, earning an additional three months of training and starting at $18 per hour. In addition, students will gain the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) CORE, and National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) certifications after completing their internship. Interested individuals may apply here.

"Manufacturing offers a fulfilling and stable career path," said Ricardo Schneider, President and General Manager of Danfoss Turbocor. "We are excited to collaborate with TCC to bring talented people to the industry and address the CNC machinist gap. Our partnership with TCC is a great example of how the private sector can work with educational institutions to bring value to all in the community. We are extremely proud of this partnership."

Danfoss continues expanding its technical support and learning resources for users and OEMs by releasing online training materials for technicians working on Danfoss Turbocor® oil-free compressors. In addition, a series of 12 e-lessons introduces the distinct oil-free technology quickly and explains why it differs from regular compressing.

"Working in collaboration with the business community to create their workforce is something that TCC is very committed to doing," said Dr. Kimberly A. Moore, Vice President for Workforce Innovation at TCC. "We understand that with the increasing need for a skilled workforce, it is critical that we be nimble and responsive. This partnership with Danfoss is a great example of our commitment to both."
