Corona Norco Unified is expanding its Mandarin Immersion Program. The program will now be available at Rosa Parks Elementary. Interested parents and students must join an informational session to be considered for the program.

The Corona-Norco Unified School District knows that preparing youngsters for the 21st century is essential. That is why they offer Dual Language Immersion (DLI) in seven elementary schools, two intermediate, and two high schools. This program allows children to learn Spanish or English while also learning Mandarin or English at a competent level.

Students who participate in Dual Language Immersion from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through 12th grade become bi-literate and develop an appreciation for cultural diversity as part of this curriculum. The course additionally equips students with the necessary college and career readiness skills to compete successfully in a globalized environment.

The Spanish curriculum follows the 90:10 model, with Kindergarten through fifth grade using 90% Spanish and 10% English, progressing to 50 percent English and 50 percent Spanish in sixth grade. Instruction at the secondary level is mainly made up of 30% Spanish and 70% English. The most significant benefit of participating in the Mandarin Language Immersion program is obtained by children who commit to the total TK – 12 DLI curriculum.

The Mandarin Language Immersion program application is available here. To be considered for the program, a parent of an incoming Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten student applying in 2021-22 must attend one mandatory parent information meeting. Parents can join the next zoom session after they fill out their form.

For more information, check out the Corona Norco Unified School district page and for related links about the different programs.
