California is preparing to launch a statewide expansion of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which will provide free books in the mail for about 2 million children over the next several years.

Currently, 30 of California’s 58 counties are part of a program that aims to foster a love for reading in young children. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced today that the state will expand to every county by 2028, broadening “millions” of young minds “to a world with infinite possibilities.”

According to a news release, California will be the first state to offer textbooks in both English and Spanish. According to a statement, the California Department of Education is looking for school districts or nonprofit organizations interested in participating in the program’s expansion throughout the state.

According to a quote from Gavin Newsom, “Dolly Parton unites us through her music — and through her commitment to helping all kids develop a love for reading. With this statewide expansion of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, California is on track to put more free books in children’s hands than any other state in the nation — broadening millions of young minds to a world of unlimited possibilities.”

How Helpful Is the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library?

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is an incredible program providing free books to children from birth to age five since 1995. The program has grown exponentially since its inception and now mails over 2 million free books monthly!

The Imagination Library provides high-quality, age-appropriate books to children in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and more. It is easy for parents to sign up their children for the program; all they have to do is check availability in their area.

In addition to providing free books, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library also offers resources on starting a program in your community. They guide choosing books and finding affiliates in your area.

The Imagination Library has had a tremendous impact on communities across the country. Over 200 million free books have been gifted in California since April 2023. Dolly Parton recently announced plans to expand her literacy efforts in Montana.

Seeing how much good one can do when one puts their mind and heart into it is inspiring. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library proves that even small actions can make a big difference in many people’s lives.
