Employees who found themselves unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are considering enrolling in a college course should be aware: The opportunity to receive up to $2,500 in financial assistance is expected to end by June 15.

According to a report by CalMatters, The Golden State Education and Training Grant Program was established in 2021 to assist employees laid off due to Covid’s collapse. However, the college grant program is on track to be canceled because of California’s current budget constraints.

Gov. Gavin Newsom, seeking to fill California’s expected $31.5 billion budget deficit in May, proposed scrapping the relief grant program entirely at the start of July. That would give taxpayers back approximately $480 million — nearly all of the state’s allotted $500 million — because it was earmarked for specific purposes rather than general spending like during previous years’ efforts (though some funds still may go toward government programs).

The student aid commission announced the program’s rollout to much fanfare, believing it would assist 190,000 people. However, only some individuals have received support as of early May. In 2022-23 and 2021-22, roughly 3500 students received grants worth $24 million through the student aid commission and 2600 via a pilot.

The legislators state that the program came too late and is fixing a problem that doesn’t exist currently. So while the grant may go away, legislators expect more funds from the higher education budget.

Student Hires Programs

Student Hires offers various programs to provide valuable job opportunities and student skill development. These programs are designed to help students gain real-world experience, enhance their resumes, and prepare them for successful careers upon graduation. Some of the critical programs offered by Student Hires include:

  1. Internship Program: This program connects students with top companies for internships in various industries, allowing them to gain hands-on experience and build professional networks.
  1. Freelance Projects: Student Hires offers a platform for students to find freelance projects that match their skills and interests, enabling them to earn money while enhancing their portfolios.
  1. Mentorship Program: Students can benefit from one-on-one mentorship from industry professionals who provide guidance, support, and career advice to help them navigate their chosen fields.
  1. Career Workshops: Student Hires organizes regular workshops and webinars on resume writing, interview skills, and job search strategies to equip students with the tools they need to succeed in the job market.
  1. Student Ambassador Program: This program allows students to represent Student Hires on their campuses, promoting the platform through events and social media while developing leadership and marketing skills.

By participating in these programs, students can develop their skills, gain valuable work experience, and increase their chances of landing their dream job after graduation.

Conclusion

While the education grant will go away soon, legislators will likely use the remaining funds to create something valuable for more people. However, eligible individuals can still access the Education Grant until June 15. Are you going to take advantage of this Education Grant before it ends? Let us know in the comments below!
